Faspitch Pitching: Step Back vs Start Back

START OR STEP BACK RULE FOR FASTPITCH SOFTBALL

One of the main differences between the softball governing bodies is the pitching rule for how a pitcher can start her pitch. It comes down to the Start Back rule and the Step Back rule. The Start Back rule is for College (NCAA), NSA (National Softball Association) and PGF. While the Step Back rule is for USA Softball, USSSA and High School (NFHS).

Always make sure you know what Rules your Tournament or League is following!

Below, Amanda Scarborough, a former two-time All-American and Big 12 Conference Player of the Year at Texas A&M and an ESPN broadcaster, has an excellent video explaining the Start Back and Step Back Rules.

Always Make sure to check the Official Rule Books for all the associations for any changes that may come. Most can be found on their respective websites or when you register a team.
